Hocking Hills is green in a way that goes beyond trees. The sandstone walls, shaded ravines and damp forest floor support an extraordinary diversity of mosses, liverworts and hornworts — collectively known as bryophytes.
And this is not just a poetic observation. A 2020 treatment of the bryophytes of Crane Hollow Preserve and Hocking County reported 235 moss species, 89 liverwort species and 3 hornwort species from the county. The Ohio Moss and Lichen Association describes Hocking County as the bryologically richest county in Ohio.
Why Hocking County is so rich in mosses
The first answer is geology. Most of Hocking County lies in the unglaciated Allegheny Plateau. Unlike much of northern and western Ohio, this landscape was not repeatedly scraped and buried beneath continental ice during the most recent glaciations.
The exposed sandstone and conglomerate, especially the Black Hand Sandstone that dominates the Hocking Hills landscape, weathers into vertical cliffs, recesses, narrow ravines and rock shelters. Those landforms create an enormous variety of tiny habitats within a small area.
A sunlit sandstone rim can be dry and exposed. Fifty feet below, a shaded seep may remain cool and wet. A vertical cliff face, rotting log, stream edge and acidic forest floor can each support different bryophytes.
Moss is not just “green fuzz”
Mosses are small nonvascular plants. They do not have flowers, seeds or the same internal plumbing system as trees and wildflowers. Instead, they absorb water across their surfaces and reproduce using spores.
That makes moisture and microhabitat especially important. Hocking Hills supplies both in abundance.
Why sandstone matters
Black Hand Sandstone does more than create famous caves. Differential weathering creates ledges, vertical faces, crevices, overhangs and sheltered pockets. A moss that requires a persistently moist shaded surface can occupy one niche while a sun-tolerant species grows only a few yards away.
The Ohio Moss and Lichen Association identifies the geology of Hocking County as the single most important factor behind the county's exceptional bryophyte diversity.
The gorge forest adds another layer
Hocking County's deep gorges are often dominated by eastern hemlock, sweet birch, red and sugar maple, and tuliptree. That canopy further moderates light and moisture.
Evergreen hemlocks keep gorge bottoms shaded year-round. Fallen logs hold water. Seeps keep sandstone damp. Creeks create splash zones and humid corridors. The result is a landscape full of surfaces that remain suitable for mosses long after exposed uplands have dried.
Liverworts: the plants most hikers never notice
Liverworts are easy to overlook because many are extremely small. Some are leafy and resemble tiny mosses; others form flattened, ribbon-like bodies called thalli.
Hocking County's 89 reported liverwort species are remarkable in a statewide context. Historical county-level work cited by the Ohio Moss and Lichen Association found far fewer species in most other Ohio counties.
You do not need to identify liverworts to appreciate them. The useful hiking habit is simply to realize that the wet green film covering a shaded sandstone surface may contain multiple plant groups rather than one anonymous “moss.”
Some Hocking County species are exceptionally restricted in Ohio
The county treatment noted several mosses known in Ohio only from Hocking County, along with additional species confirmed from Hocking and only one other Ohio county. It also reported nine mosses listed as rare in Ohio.
That is exactly why this article will not publish precise locations for rare populations. Fragile bryophytes can be damaged by trampling, collecting or even repeated off-trail visitation.
How to start noticing moss on a hike
You do not need a microscope to make the forest more interesting. Start with habitat.
- Sandstone face: look for tight mats clinging directly to rock.
- Rotting log: notice the different mosses colonizing wet wood.
- Stream edge: look for brighter mats in persistently humid areas.
- Hemlock floor: watch how moss occupies roots, stones and shaded soil.
- Sunny rim: compare exposed species with the lush growth below.
Why moss survives where larger plants struggle
A vertical sandstone wall has almost no soil. That excludes most rooted plants, but many bryophytes need very little substrate. Water moving across or through the rock can be enough to sustain a thin colony in a protected crevice.
That is one reason Hocking Hills cliffs look alive even where almost no conventional soil exists.
Moss, water and patience
Bryophytes can dry down dramatically and then resume normal activity when moisture returns. That flexibility makes them well suited to environments where the surface alternates between wet and dry.
After rain, the change can be obvious. Dull mats become saturated green, tiny leaves spread and the rock surface seems to wake up.
Where to observe without leaving the trail
Major gorge trails at Conkle's Hollow, Ash Cave and Old Man's Cave all provide opportunities to see mossy sandstone, logs and streamside habitat from established routes. The goal is not to find the rarest species. It is to notice the diversity of surfaces.
Why rock stacking is worse than it looks
Moving stream stones or sandstone fragments can destroy bryophyte colonies and disturb habitat that developed slowly. The same applies to scraping moss from rocks for photos or terrariums.
Leave the green layer where it is. In Hocking County, you may be looking at a plant community with unusually high conservation value.
The famous cliffs are only half the Hocking Hills story. The thin green skin growing across them is one of the reasons the county is botanically exceptional.
